Boundaries, Burnout, and Building Something That Lasts
Family businesses come with their own set of challenges—and rewards. When you work with someone who knows your history, your quirks, and your heart, the line between personal and professional can get blurry fast. But for us, building Sinders as sisters has become one of our greatest strengths.
We’re often asked, "How do you do it without driving each other crazy?" The truth is: we’ve had to be intentional about our relationship, our roles, and our emotional wellbeing every step of the way.

Early on, we realized the importance of defining our roles in business terms, not just personal ones. Just because we’re family doesn’t mean we approach work the same way. We took the time to figure out our strengths and built our responsibilities around them. One of us handles creative direction, the other leans into operations and client experience. By respecting each other’s zones of genius, we built a partnership that feels balanced and fair.
Communication has been key. We talk, constantly. Not just about logistics, but about how we’re feeling, what’s working, and what’s not. We created structures for this: weekly check-ins, clear decision-making processes, and a shared value of honesty. And when things get tough (because they do), we pause, breathe, and remind ourselves that our relationship comes first.

Boundaries have also saved us. In the early days, we’d talk about Sinders over every dinner, text about it late at night, and bring work stress into our personal time. Eventually, we set rules: no work talk after 8 PM, dedicated days off, and personal rituals to separate work and life. These small changes had a huge impact.
Burnout is something we’ve both experienced, and we’ve learned to spot the signs in each other. We support one another not just as co-founders, but as sisters. Whether it’s stepping in when the other needs rest or booking a spontaneous afternoon off, we prioritize health and happiness alongside business growth.
At the heart of it all is trust. We’ve built something that we both deeply care about, and we trust each other to carry that vision forward, even when one of us needs to step back. That’s the power of working with family: the shared mission, the deep understanding, and the unshakable bond.

If you’re thinking of starting a business with a loved one, do it. But do it with boundaries, empathy, and a shared vision. Building Sinders together has made us better sisters, better leaders, and better humans. And if our journey can help another duo build something meaningful in Ottawa, then that’s the legacy we’re proud to be a part of.
